To maximise & maintain genetic diversity for the good of our flock & the Rhode Island White breed at large, we clan (or spiral) mate quite a number of birds (rather than intensively mating a few).
We run multiple Single & Rose Comb RIW families & two pens of each of these families (one comprising younger birds & the other pen, older birds, thus advancing the newest genetics with the use of youngsters & selecting for inherent longevity in the older pens).
No artificial light is used to stimulate hens to lay sooner than the season dictates.
Eggs for incubation are collected from across all pens within a given period early in the season. This favours the more prolific layers (whose genes will then be proportionately & better represented in the next generation), conferring improved fertility progressively across the flock. Only eggs of good shape, quality, weight & colour are set.
As groups of chicks hatch & are removed from the incubator, their heads are marked with the indelible marker colour of their respective family, so as to accurately identify them for the permanent identification of toe-punching a few days later & later (at about 6 months of age), the more easily seen zip-tie tags of the appropriate colour).
We make progressive drafts of the youngsters as they grow, removing any lesser specimens (to the freezer). The best birds (those demonstrating health, vigour, conformation to type, weight, feather quality, temperament etc) are either retained for our breeding program going forward or offered for sale as 'breeding quality' stock in trios & quads. 'Backyard quality' birds (otherwise sound individuals with the likes of too pale leg colour or less than ideal comb) are sometimes available & sold at a discount.
Our selection process strives for sound & correct birds that not only fulfil the expected aesthetics, but also possess good temperament & the requirements of a dual purpose breed, ...that of good meat carcass bird with good egg production. Birds that are healthy, beautiful, of great utility & a joy to keep.
